Questions to ask before accepting a claim settlement
Published May 23, 2026
A settlement is usually final. A few questions up front can prevent you from leaving money on the table or signing away future rights.
Ask whether the offer is for the full repair or replacement, or just an initial payment. Ask whether depreciation was withheld and how to recover it after repairs (recoverable depreciation). Ask whether accepting closes the claim entirely. Ask what is excluded and why.
Do not feel rushed. If the numbers do not add up against your own estimates, you can negotiate, provide more documentation, or seek help before signing.
Frequently asked questions
+ What is recoverable depreciation?
On replacement-cost policies, insurers may withhold depreciation initially and release it after you complete repairs and submit proof. Ask how and when you can claim it.
