Why a timeline helps
A timeline shows how long each step took and what is still waiting. If you need to ask for a review or contact your state insurance department, a clear sequence of dates is one of the first things they will ask for.
Add deadlines you find in your policy or in letters from your insurer, such as a date to send a proof of loss or a time limit to appeal. This tool doesn’t calculate deadlines for you. They depend on your policy and your state, so check the exact wording and ask your insurer or state insurance department if you’re unsure.
Your timeline (0)
No events yet. Start with the date the loss or damage happened.
“Day” counts calendar days from the loss date, or from your earliest event if you haven’t added one.
When to get more help
- Your insurer: ask for claim decisions, and the reasons for them, in writing.
- Your state insurance department: for delays, unfair treatment, or answers you can’t get from your insurer. Find your state insurance department
- A licensed public adjuster: can handle a property claim for you, usually for a percentage of the payment.
- An attorney: for large or complex losses, missed deadlines, or if you believe the claim is being handled in bad faith.
- Employer health plans: the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration, 1-866-444-3272.
This tool helps you organize information. It is general education, not legal advice, and it doesn’t decide whether anything is covered. Your policy and your state’s rules control.
